A one-time Sunderland AFC prodigy has been compelled to walk away from the sport at just 28 years old after sustaining a brain haemorrhage during a training session last October.
The defender, who hails from Ashington, progressed through Sunderland’s youth system before graduating in 2018. He subsequently accumulated 84 senior appearances across all competitions for the club.
Following his departure from Sunderland, the player moved to Portsmouth in 2022 and subsequently transferred to Grimsby Town two years afterwards. Last summer, he put pen to paper on a two-year deal with Fleetwood Town.
Tragically, his campaign and consequently his professional trajectory were brought to an abrupt conclusion in October under the most unfortunate circumstances. A seemingly harmless collision during training resulted in a bleed on the brain.
Fleetwood’s then-manager Pete Wild revealed in November that extensive medical examinations had been conducted over several weeks and that fortunately the condition was healing. He noted that the individual still faced considerable psychological processing of the incident, describing how it had profoundly affected both him and the club given the seemingly minor nature of the initial contact.
According to Wild, the player was tracking the ball when he pivoted his head and collided fully with another participant’s knee, immediately hitting the ground. As the severity became apparent over the following days, it prompted reflection on what truly matters in existence.
Approximately ten months subsequent to that incident, the player has declared his permanent departure from professional football. Utilising social media to announce the news, he explained that he never anticipated having to compose such a statement at his age, but that specialist medical guidance had concluded his footballing career. After experiencing a fractured skull and brain bleed during the previous season, he had spent the intervening months attempting to recover and return to his greatest passion. Regrettably, this proved impossible, requiring him to accept the situation.
He expressed difficulty articulating what the sport had represented to him, having joined Sunderland at age eight and dedicating his entire existence to football with a singular aspiration of representing the first team. Achieving that goal, making 84 appearances, earning a Championship debut and performing at Wembley represented achievements of which he would remain profoundly proud.
He expressed gratitude to everyone at the club who facilitated these accomplishments. The sport had provided remarkable experiences across his spells at Sunderland, Portsmouth, Grimsby and Fleetwood, with each club offering distinct perspectives and opportunities to form lasting friendships. While challenging periods and difficult moments had occurred, including injuries, five surgical procedures and injections, he would not alter his journey as it had shaped him and offered an alternative outlook on life.
He singled out Grimsby Town for special recognition, noting the club had rekindled his enthusiasm for football during a period when he desperately required it. To every manager, staff member, colleague and supporter involved in his career, he offered thanks.
Most significantly, he thanked his family, partner and close companions for their sacrifices, counsel and presence through both triumphs and tribulations, stating their support had made everything possible.
While football had constituted a fundamental part of his identity and sole frame of reference, he expressed enthusiasm about exploring what existence holds beyond the pitch. He felt privileged and proud of his trajectory in the sport and anticipated discovering what the future held.
Several of his former employers also extended well-wishes for his upcoming ventures, with Sunderland AFC, Grimsby Town and various former teammates posting supportive messages across social media.
