Former Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes was on target as Arsenal claimed a 2-0 victory at the Stadium of Light on Friday evening.

The Brazil international completed a £75 million move to Arsenal during the summer transfer window.

He had been sidelined for the season opener through a hamstring complaint before being named among the substitutes for the subsequent three Premier League fixtures.

With Arsenal finding it difficult to break down Sunderland in the opening period, Guimaraes was introduced at the interval.

His impact was immediate, firing home the opening goal shortly after goalkeeper David Raya had kept out a spot-kick.

The strike marked the 28-year-old’s first goal for his new club.

His celebrations drew significant attention, with the midfielder appearing to mock the home supporters by gesturing towards the stands as if indicating their smaller stature.

He then cupped his hands to his ears and silenced the crowd as teammates rushed to congratulate him.

The response from Newcastle United’s current squad proved enthusiastic.

Joelinton posted an image of the celebration accompanied by a message reading that once a Geordie remains a Geordie.

Sam Fender’s track Seventeen Going Under accompanied the post.

Guimaraes subsequently shared the message to his own social media story.

Nick Woltemade simply expressed surprise with an exclamation.

Sven Botman described the moment as quality using his native language.

Joe Willock responded with several heart emojis.

Former Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon was among those who indicated approval of the post.

Guimaraes reflected on the goal afterward, describing it as beautiful in a very good place.

Arsenal wrapped up the three points late on through Bukayo Saka’s penalty, which resulted in Sunderland’s Reinildo Mandava receiving a red card.

Newcastle United are scheduled to face Leeds United at Elland Road on Monday evening, with kick-off at 8pm.
