Thomas Meunier remains the club’s sole summer acquisition, and Le Bris has emphasised the importance of bringing in quality over volume. Sunderland have so far managed to retain their most important assets.
Discussions are ongoing with Ligue 1 side Toulouse regarding defender Dayann Methalie, though alternative options have been identified should negotiations prove unsuccessful. The player himself has given his approval on personal terms, leaving hope for a potential agreement.
Marseille approach
French publication La Provence reports that Sunderland are exploring a cut-price move for United States international Timothy Weah, taking advantage of Marseille’s financial struggles.
The 26-year-old winger has demonstrated flexibility in recent seasons, capable of playing on either flank of defence. He completed a permanent switch to Marseille this summer after being on loan from Juventus, making 41 appearances and finding the net three times last term in a deal worth around £12m.
The report suggests Sunderland view a low fee as achievable given Marseille’s circumstances.
The Chronicle’s assessment suggests the move could make sense only if Sunderland require squad depth and a reasonable price can be negotiated. While the club has previously favoured versatile players, this summer appears different, with a recognised right winger who can contribute goals and assists appearing more necessary. West Ham defender interest
DSports claims Sunderland and Brentford are both pursuing West Ham United left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf in a potential £50m move.
The Senegalese international was one of the few positives during West Ham’s relegation campaign, making 35 appearances. The Hammers are undergoing a rebuild following their drop to the Championship.
According to the Chronicle, Sunderland’s interest in another full-back comes as they seek alternatives to Dayann Methalie, with talks over the French defender stalling. Toulouse have rejected a bid of approximately £28m for the rising star. A move for Diouf at £40m-£50m would appear unlikely given the club are pursuing a cheaper option in the same position.
Midfielder setback
Abdoullah Ba has spoken publicly about his failed transfer to Peterborough United. The French playmaker, who has not played for Sunderland in nearly two years, appeared close to joining the League One club after terms were agreed between the sides.
Ba took to social media to explain the collapse, stating an agreement was in place for him to leave but his requests were not fulfilled and it did not seem right for his representatives regarding his career. He noted his future at Sunderland remains pending official confirmation.
The Chronicle reports this represents a setback for Sunderland, who are eager to move on the midfielder. While the club has successfully shifted other fringe players this summer, Ba, who has not featured under Le Bris, continues to remain on the books.
